Peru For The Gourmet Traveler
Popular Foods & National CuisineCeviche Popular Beverages & National DrinksPisco Best Dining DestinationsLima CevicheCeviche, the national dish of Peru, is a refreshing and different dish made with delicious limes native to the country. The fresh fish in this dish is not cooked by traditional methods, yet cooked by marinating in lime juice for quite a few hours. Onions, garlic, and cilantro will almost always be included and the dish is served chilled. Ceviche may seem strange to some who are not used to this type of lime-cooked method, but please give it at least a taste. You might end up preparing something so simple yet tasty when you return back from your journey. PiscoChile and Peru have an ongoing war about who has the best pisco. Like in Chile pisco is Peru's national drink. The name originates from the Incan word for pisscu which translates into bird and is also the name of a city. Pisco is a strong alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes. Either it can be enjoyed all alone or mixed with lime juice, sugar, and egg whites to form the pisco sour. Egg whites in a mixed drink? Yes this might sound strange to some but a pisco sour is very refreshing and you should give it a try when traveling to Peru. You might end up bringing this experience back home for friends and family.
LimaLima has a huge selection of restaurants to chose from when dining out in this capital city. Almost every type of cuisine from around the world can be found in the various restaurants populated throughout the city. Some of the best places to stop at are those that specialize in Peruvian cuisine where you can enjoy a pisco sour and a nice refreshing bowl of ceviche.
